The software development statistics that matter in 2026 are these: 84% of developers use AI tools, 46% distrust the accuracy of what those tools produce, a controlled trial measured a 19% slowdown for experienced developers, and Pakistan's IT exports hit a record $4.6 billion. Each number is useful once you know its source and its limits.
We have only included figures we read at the source or in a reputable report of it. Where a number is old, we say so.
Key takeaways
- 84% of developers use AI tools and 46% distrust the accuracy of the output (Stack Overflow, 2025).
- METR's controlled trial found a 19% slowdown for experienced developers in early 2025, and its 2026 update says speed-ups are likely larger now but the data is weak.
- Gartner expects 75% of enterprise software engineers to use AI code assistants by 2028, and 40% of agentic AI projects to be cancelled by end of 2027.
- Pakistan's IT exports reached a record $4.6 billion in FY2025-26, up 20% (SBP via ProPakistani).
01How Many Developers Use AI Tools?
The Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey drew more than 48,000 responses from 177 countries and found 84% of developers using AI tools. The same survey found 46% do not trust the accuracy of AI output, up from 31% in 2024, and 66% named solutions that are almost right but not quite as their top frustration (TechRepublic, summarising the survey).
DORA's 2025 research reports about 90% use and adds a finding worth remembering: AI amplifies what a team already does, strong or weak (DORA 2025 report).

02Does AI Make Developers Faster in Practice?
The best controlled evidence is METR's. Sixteen experienced open-source developers completed 246 real issues, and with AI tools allowed they took 19% longer, while believing they had been 20% faster (METR, July 2025). METR says that result is now out of date. Its February 2026 update says developers are likely more sped up with newer tools, and that its data is only weak evidence for the size of the gain (METR, February 2026).
Sixteen developers is a small sample, working in familiar, mature codebases. Read the result as a caution against assuming speed, not as proof of slowness.
03What Do Analysts Forecast for AI in Software?
Gartner forecast in April 2024 that 75% of enterprise software engineers would use AI code assistants by 2028, up from under 10% in early 2023 (Gartner). In June 2025 it predicted that over 40% of agentic AI projects would be cancelled by the end of 2027, citing cost, unclear value and weak risk controls (Gartner).
Forecasts are not facts, but together they say adoption will be broad and many ambitious projects will stall.
Adoption will be broad. Many ambitious projects will still stall.
04What Do the Statistics Say About Pakistan?
The State Bank of Pakistan's data, reported by ProPakistani in July 2026, put FY2025-26 IT exports at a record $4.6 billion, up 20% or $786 million from $3.814 billion in FY25. The figure fell about $400 million short of the government's $5 billion target (ProPakistani).
We could not find a public Pakistan-specific survey of AI use in software delivery, so we do not quote one. If you see a precise local figure, ask for the source.
| Statistic | Figure | Source and year |
|---|---|---|
| Developers using AI tools | 84% | Stack Overflow, 2025 |
| Developers distrusting AI accuracy | 46% | Stack Overflow, 2025 |
| Experienced developers' measured change with AI | 19% slower | METR, July 2025 |
| Engineers using AI code assistants by 2028 | 75% forecast | Gartner, April 2024 |
| Agentic AI projects cancelled by end of 2027 | Over 40% forecast | Gartner, June 2025 |
| Pakistan IT exports FY2025-26 | $4.6 billion, up 20% | SBP via ProPakistani, July 2026 |
05How Should a Buyer Use These Numbers?
Use them to ask better questions, not to justify a purchase. If your vendor cites AI productivity, ask which study. If they promise an agent that runs your operations, ask what the cancellation forecast means for their plan. If they quote a price, ask what review and testing it includes.
A short list of questions is in how to choose a software development company. For a view on where AI projects go wrong, see accountability for AI in the enterprise. If you want help reading your own situation against the data, get in touch.
06What Do These Statistics Not Tell You?
They do not tell you how good your vendor is. A survey of 48,000 developers describes a population, and your project is one case. They do not tell you the cost of your build, because cost depends on scope, integrations and how clearly you can describe the work.
They also age quickly. METR's own page says its 2025 result is out of date, and Gartner's forecasts are projections made at a point in time. If you reuse any figure in a board paper or a proposal, link the source, state the year and say what was measured. That small habit protects your credibility, and it is the habit we follow in this post.
If a salesperson quotes a statistic without a source, ask where it came from. A good one will send the link within a day.
Frequently asked questions
84% in the Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey of more than 48,000 respondents, and about 90% in DORA's 2025 research. Samples and definitions differ.
The evidence is mixed. METR's 2025 trial measured a 19% slowdown for experienced developers, and its 2026 update says gains are likely larger now but the data is weak.
The State Bank of Pakistan data reported in July 2026 shows IT exports of $4.6 billion for FY2025-26, up 20% from $3.814 billion.
Reliability varies with sample size, who was asked and how old the data is. Check the original source, the sample and the date before using a figure.
